What is Home Health Care?

Elderly Care

Home Health Care, is health care provided in a patient's home by healthcare professionals. Services are either medical care provided by nurses, doctors or therapist or non-medical care or custodial care, which is care that is provided by home attendants or caregivers. In either case, the term home health care refers to care that is provided by licensed personnel.

Short Term Care

Some patients only require short term care. People recovering from an accident or heart surgery are a good example of home health care. Your doctor may decide that you no longer need to stay in the hospital. However, you may not be well enough to care for yourself. In this case your doctor may prescribe home health care so that you may continue to receive therapy at home and/or a caregiver to help take care of your personal needs.

Long Term Care

Long term care services may include medical, social, housekeeping, or rehabilitation services a person needs over months or years in order to improve or maintain function or health. Such services are provided not only in nursing homes, but also in patients' homes or in community-based settings such as assisted-living facilities.

Many services and programs are alternatives to nursing home care. Both medical and non-medical care may be received at home or in residential settings, and can range from simple (light housekeeping) to complex (nursing care or physical therapy) services.
